Magpies remain on top PDF Print E-mail

COLLINGWOOD has underlined its growing premiership credentials with a clinical 36-point win over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.

The contest between the top two teams was billed as the match of the round, but the Pies split the game wide open after half time, kicking 10 of the last 15 goals to win their fifth consecutive game convincingly and remain top of the table.

Travis Cloke, who booted five goals from six shots, epitomised the Pies’ deadly accuracy and was a key figure in the 20.13 (133) to 15.7 (97) win.

It was at the stoppages, however, where the Pies held their clearest advantage, with Dane Swan (31 possessions and seven clearances), Scott Pendlebury (27 and seven), Shane O’Bree (25) and Dayne Beams (23) all influential. Luke Ball had 22 possessions and six inside 50s in his 150th game.

Coach Mick Malthouse refused to be drawn on Collingwood’s near faultless 7-1 start to the season, but said his current group was in the best position it had been to mount a premiership challenge.

“We are better placed because we are a better side,” he said after the game. “The win-loss ratio is good, but it's not significant. A win's a win and is terrific, but we have to keep moving forward.

Collingwood forward Travis Cloke kicks five to end Fremantle's charge for top PDF Print E-mail

TRAVIS Cloke booted five goals as Collingwood continued its premiership charge with a convincing 36-point AFL win over fellow high flyers Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Friday night.

The Magpies led by 31 points late in the first quarter but looked vulnerable when the Dockers stormed back to close the gap to six points midway through the second term.

But it was as close as the home side could get, with Cloke's dominance up forward and classy midfield drive from Dane Swan, Ben Johnson, Luke Ball and Dale Thomas powering the Pies to the 20.13 (133) to 15.7 (97) victory.

Collingwood's seventh win of the season put them a game clear of second-placed Fremantle, while Geelong, Sydney, St Kilda and Port Adelaide can join the Dockers on six wins if they win this weekend.

In an intriguing match featuring two vastly different game styles, the Magpies' exquisite rebound from the backline and clean hands in close proved the difference.

Fremantle breaks 15-year Gabba hoodoo PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE withstood a courageous Brisbane Lions comeback to break a 15-year hoodoo and win by 13 points at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The visitors won 15.23 (113) to 15.10 (100) but not before the Lions reduced a 26-point lead to just six points in an exhilarating final quarter.

Not only did the Lions lose the match, but they also lost stars Jared Brennan (ankle) and Josh Drummond (knee) to what looked like serious injuries.

Both hobbled off during the third quarter and did not return.

The Lions lost Joel Patfull before the match and were also without Matt Maguire (suspended), Daniel Merrett and Mitch Clark (injured).

But Fremantle deserved their win and only their poor kicking kept the Lions in the match for much of the night.

Captain Matthew Pavlich was a guilty party, finishing with 3.4, but he was a star for his team whether up forward or in the middle.

Stephen Hill was all class in the middle, while Chris Tarrant and Luke McPharlin wore respective opponents Jonathan Brown (one goal) and Brendan Fevola (three) like gloves.
