scource: Afl.com.au FREMANTLE has embarrassed Port Adelaide while making a statement about its own future, notching an emphatic 42-point victory over the Power at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
Led by a host of first-year players who came of age, Fremantle smashed the Power in every facet of the game to run out 17.14 (116) to 11.8 (74) winners. Despite the loss, the Power cling to the final place in the eight over Essendon by half a game following the Bombers' draw with the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night.
The home side raced out to a 30-point lead at the first break and extended that to 60 points at the last change. The visitors made a belated attempt at some scoreboard respectability by kicking five of the last six goals of the match, but the damage had been done.
While Port Adelaide stays in eighth, Essendon, Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans are all still in the finals hunt - and all would be more deserving of the opportunity based on Sunday's meek capitulation.
Fremantle will justifiably celebrate its fifth win for the season, and just its second in 12 matches, and will be pleased that a band of youngsters led the way.
Greg Broughton (37 possessions), Matt de Boer (22 and eight clearances), Stephen Hill (22 touches) and Chris Mayne (four goals) all played key roles. The home side ran harder offensively than their top-eight opponents while being more desperate defensively, keeping the Power to just 39 inside 50s for the match. While skipper Matthew Pavlich and star ruckman Aaron Sandilands were quieter than usual, the home side didn't miss a beat after kicking six straight goals in the opening term.
If the Power thought they were in for an easy day when Robbie Gray kicked the opener, they were soon given a reality check.
Paul Hasleby answered instantly with a super running goal from just inside 50m, and Fremantle would go on to kick seven goals to two for the opening quarter.
Jay van Berlo, Des Headland and Clancee Pearce kicked early goals, and when Nick Suban strolled inside 50 to kick Freo's fifth straight, alarm bells were ringing for the Power.
Hasleby was dominating Kane Cornes early, while Hill was given free rein by the Power and made them pay with his damaging run and carry and precise ball use. It took three quarters for the Power to shut down the promising youngster.
When the ball fell into Antoni Grover's lap deep in the forward pocket and he snapped an unlikely goal, it appeared nothing could go wrong for Freo.
If Port Adelaide was worried, there was no discernible sign. Their intensity was minimal as the home side continued to run riot, and when Warren Tredrea kicked the Power's second for the term, his efforts sparked little in terms of emotion.
Danyle Pearce gave the Power a lift to start the second, but the quarter belonged to Fremantle forward Mayne, who booted three goals, and Hill, who continued to rack up damaging possessions.
Kane Cornes started to fire some shots in his battle with Hasleby, but he was fighting a lone battle as his side slipped further behind and hit the rooms 45 points in arrears at the main break.
Shaun Burgoyne tried to ignite his side in the third, booting two goals, but any momentum gained was short-lived as Fremantle built a 10-goal lead at the final change, chiefly through Des Headland.
Power coach Mark Williams gave his side an unforgiving spray with a quarter to go, but the last term did little to paper over the cracks that had appeared when Fremantle turned on the intensity back in the first term.
Next week, Fremantle travels to Melbourne to play the Demons at the MCG on Sunday, while Port Adelaide is at home to Carlton, also on Sunday afternoon.
